‘It is still a dream’: 24-year-old Klopp once called ‘outstanding’ says he wants to play for Liverpool

Former Liverpool youngster Allan Rodrigues de Souza still hopes of returning to play for Liverpool.

In an interview with The Athletic, the Brazilian claims that he still dreams of coming back to Anfield and playing for The Reds.

“I have great memories of the club, the supporters and the atmosphere of Anfield on a match day. It is still a dream and if it was down to me I would return to the club one day,” said Allan.

The 24-year-old was signed by Liverpool in 2015. Unfortunately due to work permit restrictions he never made an appearance for the club before leaving permanently in 2020.

What’s his story

If things had have been different, we could be talking about Allan as a first-team player at Liverpool by now.

When Jurgen Klopp arrived on Merseyside, he was blown away by the player’s talent.

“I saw him in training and I thought ‘oh my God, what can we do to keep this boy here and bring him into the line-up?’”, Klopp told liverpoolfc.com in March 2016.

“He’s 19-years-old, an outstanding talent, a good player with a good attitude, everybody loves him, he’s a nice lad – so that’s really, really good.”

However rules meant that Allan was bounced around on loan.

He had big league experience in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt. But he couldn’t hold down a first team place and eventually left Liverpool for Atletico Mineiro.

The Reds managed to fetch £3.2m for the attacking midfielder. Despite never playing for the club, that represented a £2.7m profit.

Any chance of a comeback

After leaving Liverpool, Allan has found success in Brazil.

Playing alongside Diego Costa and Hulk for Atletico, he recently helped win the club’s first league title in 50 years.

They then completed a domestic double with a Copa Do Brasil triumph in December.

Allan claims that he is still in close contact with Roberto Firmino. It’s likely that having spoken so effusively about the player, Klopp is aware of his recent successes.

He is still yet to turn 25-years-old. That means that there is slim hope that Allan can fulfil his dream of an Anfield return.

But in order to do so, he would surely have to return to Europe and impress for a club closer to home for Liverpool.
