Ronald Araujo and Gavi to turn down Liverpool transfer interest

Liverpool appear set to lose out on transfers for Barcelona pair Ronald Araujo and Gavi. Reports indicate their interest won’t mean much.

This comes from Sport. They claim that both Ronald Araujo and Gavi want to remain with Barcelona and are keen to sign new contracts.

Both players are in interesting contractual situations right now. Araujo’s deal expires in 2023, meaning Barcelona could face pressure to sell this summer. Gavi, on the other hand, has a £45m release clause that will tempt every major club in Europe.

And Liverpool, reportedly, were tempted on both players. Sport said just last month that Liverpool hoped to sign Araujo – a move that we can see real logic in. Mundo Deportivo linked Liverpool with Gavi earlier this week but it now appears that one won’t go anywhere.

Liverpool to lose out on Barcelona transfers

It’s not a massive surprise. Barcelona are struggling for cash but these are two players they’ll put everything they have behind.

Xavi recently labelled Araujo ‘spectacular’ as a sign of his faith in the Uruguayan. Araujo could well be the future of their back four.

He understandably rates Gavi highly, too, claiming the youngster ‘has no ceiling’ in football. That’s incredibly high praise from one of the game’s greatest ever midfielders.

None of this should be a shock, then. Liverpool could work wonders with both players – particularly, Gavi – but they were always long-shots as summer transfers. Not that we should entirely give up all hope.

This is Barcelona, after all, and things can collapse spectacularly even when they appear to be going well. That’s true on and off the pitch, really, and Liverpool know that as well as anyone.

Should that happen again, we expect the Reds at the front of the queue for these two. One to watch, then – but only with a glimmer of hope.
