Takumi Minamino admits he’s ‘not satisfied’ with his Liverpool spell yet

Takumi Minamino isn’t satisfied with how his Liverpool career has gone so far. The Japan international wants more out of his Anfield spell.

Takumi Minamino arrived at Liverpool two years ago now from RB Salzburg. He’d actually just faced the Reds in the Champions League, putting in a fine display at Anfield. He looked so good, in fact, that we suggested Liverpool should try to sign him.

Funnily enough, they did. Minamino was a Liverpool player within months and for a bargain £7.25m fee.

Fast-forward to now, though, and the 27-year-old hasn’t really met expectations. To be fair, he’s barely played – his first year at Liverpool led to just four Premier League starts – and there’s a constant sense that Jurgen Klopp doesn’t entirely trust him.

At least, not as much as the other stars.

“Taki is high quality,” Klopp said earlier this season, per Liverpoolfc.com. “Taki’s problem is… actually, there is no problem apart from the other players in his positions are really good and thank God for us they are not injured.”

That’s all well and good for Liverpool but for Minamino?. He recently explained in a video for the Reds that he wants to contribute more.

“Playing for Liverpool was a childhood dream and I’m really happy to be here as the club’s first Asian player,” he said. “I would love to achieve something here and I am not satisfied with my results yet.

“Any achievements I make here could bring more chances for Asian players who may play at this club in the future. It will also give supporters a better idea of what an Asian player can do shining for this club.

“I would love to contribute to the team more.”

To be fair to Minamino, things have actually clicked a little this season. He’s got two Premier League goals despite playing under 90 minutes total this season. There are also four goals in the EFL Cup that played a huge part in Liverpool making the final.

His biggest problem remains the same, though – the other forwards provide more than him. And with Luis Diaz joining last month, that’s never been truer.

So we’re not actually sure where Minamino goes from here. We like him as a player and he is contributing more for Liverpool every time he steps onto the pitch. But with such competition for the forward roles, his future remains very unclear.
