Reported Liverpool target Youri Tielemans sees asking price slashed to £40m

Supposed Liverpool target Youri Tielemans has seen a significant price drop, according to reports. The Belgian could leave Leicester City.

There have been rumours surrounding Liverpool and Youri Tielemans for some time now. Voetbal24 said back last summer that the Reds liked the player, in fact, and that Tielemans was smiling about a potential move.

Now, things have gone quiet on that front ever since and few saw a January move on the cards. For one thing, Liverpool focused on signing a winger, rather than a midfielder.

Perhaps that could change in the summer, though. Especially as the Daily Star claims Tielemans could cost around £40m. That’s the figure Manchester United believe they could tempt Leicester City with – way down on the £70m the Leicester Mercury reported last July.

This is one that seemed a lot nicer last summer than it does now. Tielemans hasn’t enjoyed the greatest campaign so far, despite Brendan Rodgers labelling him ‘one of Europe’s top midfield players’.

But you can say that about Leicester as a whole – they’ve been very disappointing. You’ve also got to imagine that Tielemans’ future weighs on him a little as it seems certain he’ll depart this summer.

The way we see it, Tielemans definitely boasts enough talent for a £40m transfer. Liverpool could almost certainly work wonders with the player and turn him into a superstar – if that’s what they want.

The Reds may actually be at the point where they don’t want to introduce any new midfielders. Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones both look set for midfield roles long-term and both are incredibly exciting talents. Bringing in someone ahead of them – even as good as Tielemans – isn’t as nice a prospect as it was a year ago.

But £40m could really be a bargain. We think this is one to watch, then, as it does appear that Tielemans will be on the move. If Liverpool want a midfielder, they’ll struggle to match that value for money – providing this season is just a blip.
