Jurgen Klopp thrilled at squad depth luxury at Liverpool he’s rarely had before

Jurgen Klopp feels he’s got squad depth at Liverpool that he’s never really had before. The German is determined to make use of it.

Has Liverpool’s squad ever looked this good? Certainly, it’s been a long time since the Reds boasted this kind of depth all over the pitch.

Luis Diaz arriving from FC Porto highlights it. Liverpool added another goalscoring winger to their selection and now boast Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino as first-XI options. They’ve got Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino behind them – and those two have their fair share of goals this season.

In midfield, Liverpool have a wonderful mix of elite experience and exciting prospects. Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson are a first-choice trio that has done it all at club level. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both look good this season, too, while James Milner is as experienced as it gets. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott inject that youth as youngsters with all the potential in the world.

Liverpool are stronger than ever at centre-back. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate could all play for anyone in the world. Andy Robertson is, for our money, the world’s best left-back, while Kostas Tsimikas looks absolutely fantastic in his own right.

The only real issue is at right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the world’s best but Liverpool lack anyone behind him. Things are better in goal, though – Caoimhin Kelleher is good enough to play for half of the Premier League and he sits behind world-class Alisson Becker.

Jurgen Klopp has a lot to work with in the Liverpool squad, then. And he’s determined to use it.

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool squad depth

“Until the [Manchester] United game, we play 12 games, so with the last game included that’s 13 games in a short period, so [the squad depth] is massive,” he said, per Liverpoolfc.com.

“It is always the same, but we didn’t speak about these kind of things very often because we didn’t have it very often, but now it looks like in the moment we have it for once, so now let’s just use it.

“That’s the plan and let’s use it as smartly as possible, so that we can really bring all the energy and all the quality we have in each of these 12 games on the pitch and be good enough to win them.

“They are incredibly difficult games, they are difficult, all competitions involved. Yes, it’s tough but that’s why we built the squad and hopefully we can use it.”

The next few months are simply massive for Liverpool and Klopp. The Reds are fighting for four trophies, with the EFL Cup final later this month. But they’ll also look to compete in the FA Cup, Champions League and hopefully claw back some points on Manchester City in the Premier League.

Having such squad depth is vital and we truly believe there’s enough there to compete in all four competitions. It’s been a long, long time since we’ve been able to say that.
