Liverpool could move to activate the release clause of Barcelona prodigy Gavi, according to reports. The Catalonians are ready to offer a new contract.
This comes from Mundo Deportivo. They claim Liverpool hold an interest in Gavi as his release clause sits at around £45m.
That will inevitably tempt clubs. Gavi has exploded as a first-team option for Barcelona this season, consistently starting at just 17 years old. Even more impressively, he’s starting to really contribute. Sunday saw Gavi score against Atletico Madrid in a crunch game for La Liga’s top four.
Gavi doesn’t even have a set position, really, having played centre-midfield, on the wing and – as against Atletico – centrally in the forward line. That kind of versatility at 17 is virtually unheard of and Barcelona clearly have a special player here.
Xavi certainly thinks so. He labelled Gavi ‘spectacular’ earlier in the season, per Marca, and sees a very bright future for the youngster. He’ll just need to hope that’s at Barcelona.
Liverpool want Gavi
Mundo Deportivo’s article goes on to say that Barcelona will offer a new contract to Gavi. Such a deal would boost his release clause and essentially rule out any possibility that he joins Liverpool.
But it’s important to note that a move appears unlikely regardless. Gavi doesn’t want to leave Barcelona, it seems, and the club enter these negotiations with confidence. Liverpool, in contrast, need to hope for a dramatic collapse between those two parties.
And so we wouldn’t hold our breath on Gavi joining Liverpool anytime soon. His immediate future is certainly in Catalonia and we seems to want his long-term future there, too.
His talent and proven quality, however, does mean Liverpool will almost certainly push for Gavi should he open up to a move. We’ll cross our fingers with next to no real expectation.
