Harvey Elliott made his long-awaited return for Liverpool on Sunday against Cardiff City. The teenager looks ready to hit a high level.

“It’s my job,” Harvey Elliott told ITV after making his return for Liverpool on Sunday. It’s been five months since we’ve seen him but Jurgen Klopp gave him the final 30 minutes against Cardiff City.

And what a job he did. Elliott got heavily involved, enjoying 40 touches and a 90% pass completion over his time. The youngster never once shied away from play and actively wanted to make things happen.

What stood out most was how sharp he looked. Elliott stepped into the fray and was immediately in-sync with the rest of the side. Honestly, it felt as though he hadn’t been away.

The standout moment was, of course, the goal. Elliott scored a wonderful third as he brought down a cross and fired it into the corner on the spin. The technique was outstanding for any player – let alone an 18-year-old who hasn’t played in months.

And with that, it feels as though Liverpool are getting an elite player back.

Elliott didn’t play too many games before his injury but the data from them is outstanding. Truly, it went a little under the radar just how well he was playing.

And that was Elliott’s start. He’s only going to improve and was already performing at an elite level. With more minutes, more trust, and more experience, the 18-year-old is only going to get better.

The extra encouraging thing, then, is that Elliott doesn’t appear to need a return period. He looks ready to shine right away, without easing in – he should get right back to that level quickly.

The Reds are getting a top player here right as the season enters its business end.
