One Belgian pundit believes Divock Origi is something different to a ‘regular’ footballer at Liverpool. The forward is in a ‘special situation’.

Do Liverpool have someone very unique in Divock Origi? They do, according to Belgian journalist Fred Waseige. The former footballer says Origi isn’t a ‘regular’ footballer – and that makes his future uncertain.

“The guy understands that he is a step below the club’s four star strikers,” he told Le Soir. “When he comes on, he wins you games, and Liverpool are very happy with him, even if he would like to play more.

“He plays for the title every year, and he is very well paid. Which club will make a financial effort for Divock?

“He’s a big-time guy rather than a regular player. He’s in fabulous uncomfortable luxury at Liverpool; it’s quite a special situation.”

Well, he’s right. Origi is a bizarre player – someone who is quite plainly below the elite level while simultaneously being a massive danger in the biggest games. His UEFA Champions League campaign in 2019 proved that but we saw it again this season.

Origi popped up with a vital winner against Wolves when no one else could. Not even the Premier League’s top goalscorer, Mohamed Salah. And the thing is, it wasn’t surprising.

The Belgian is a fantastic finisher and a big-game player. He’ll deliver in the most important moments, even though he’s not good enough to start regularly.

Honestly, Liverpool are very fortunate to have him as their backup striker as he’s perfect for the role. But there’s a big summer ahead.

Origi’s contract actually expires in July unless Liverpool play him in a certain number of games before then. There’s pressure to use him in order to avoid losing the player on a free transfer but that means deliberately playing someone who isn’t as good as your other options.

But Origi is such a unique player that Liverpool, surely, will make an effort to hold onto him.
