Report: Liverpool could be set for period of hostility with PL club, their chairman is ‘raging’

Liverpool’s £37.5m signing of Luis Diaz has angered Tottenham Hotspurs to the point that chairman Daniel Levy is “raging”.

That’s according to The Athletic who have provided an in-depth look at how Liverpool stole a march on the London club to poach Diaz.

Why are Spurs so angry

The report claims that Tottenham had a signed agreement in place with Porto. Diaz is also said to have been happy with the terms offered to him by Spurs.

However, crucially, the 25-year-old was away on international duty. As a result, there was yet to be anything signed by the player himself.

The Athletic report that Liverpool became aware of Spurs lowering Porto’s asking price for the Colombian and decided to act. At that point Diaz’s agent blocked the Tottenham move and negotiated only with The Reds.

Incoming Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward is claimed to have been key in convincing owner’s FSG to pursue the deal.

Levy, who was said to be “invested” in the deal happening, was so angry at Liverpool’s conduct that it could lead to a “period of hostility” between the two clubs.

Should Liverpool be worried

Although Liverpool don’t appear to have broken any rules, they may be wary of a reaction from Spurs.

Levy is not a man you generally want to upset. The two sides rarely do any direct transfer business, but Liverpool rely on the support of their “Big Six” allies during Premier League votes.

It’s unlikely that the Tottenham chairman will be as sympathetic to any Liverpool causes as he may previously have been.

But from a Liverpool perspective, it is a hugely encouraging show of strength from Michael Edwards’ replacement Ward.

It also highlights the current gulf between the two clubs, as well as the pull that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has on potential new signings.
