Gini Wijnaldum could reportedly suffer a major career setback at PSG this month. The former Liverpool midfielder is having a tough time.
Le Parisien reports that Gini Wijnaldum is on the chopping block for Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League squad. PSG have too many foreign players and will need to cut one.
Wijnaldum is an obvious choice, given his current ankle injury and general poor form since moving to France. Other options include Julian Draxler and Ander Herrera but both are more long-standing players than the Dutchman.
There’s a very real chance that PSG leave out Wijnaldum, then. It would be a major setback in his career – this was supposed to be his final big move in pursuit of further trophies.
Instead, the 31-year-old’s career has gone backwards since leaving Anfield. And the Reds didn’t even want to lose him.
PSG could leave out Gini Wijnaldum
It was apparent at the back end of last season that Wijnaldum would leave Liverpool. On his final game, Jurgen Klopp raved about the midfielder, labelling him ‘wonderful’ and saying he was losing a friend.
The Reds’ boss hated to lose such a key player – a starting midfielder in one of Liverpool’s greatest ever teams. The club had their reasons for letting Wijnaldum go, though we didn’t always agree with them.
Right now, however, it’s hard to see how Wijnaldum’s exit benefitted anyone. Liverpool have suffered injuries in midfield that he would have covered beautifully, while the squad still lacks another all-action midfielder.
While Wijnaldum himself has seen his stock fall dramatically every since leaving for PSG. The Parisiens haven’t exactly been a proper team since he joined but we didn’t see things going sour quite this quickly.
And if they do leave him out of their Champions League squad, you’ve got to wonder what’s next. It would be a major blow for a player who was on top of the world just a short while ago.
