'That's insane': Liverpool fans stunned by what happened to Alisson during Brazil game last night

Alisson Becker enjoyed an eventful evening for Brazil last night. The Liverpool goalie was twice sent off by the referee, only for VAR to overturn the dismissals both times.

Yes, you read that correctly. Liverpool’s ‘keeper was sent off twice in one game.

To make matters even more bizarre, his were the third and fourth sending’s off of a chaotic game. Ecuador’s ‘keeper had already been given his marching orders, as well as Tottenham’s Emerson Royal.

What happened

The incidents were both very similar.

The first one came as Alisson attempted to clear a bouncing ball. His trailing leg caught the Ecuador player running in to block it. After consulting his assistants, the referee rightly rescinded the red card and gave the ‘keeper a yellow instead.

The second incident came deep into stoppage time. With the game at 1-1 and Ecuador chasing a crucial winner, Alisson punched a ball in the box. Again, a travelling Ecuador player got there a split second late and was pole-axed by the big Brazilian.

The referee sent the ‘keeper off for a second time, this time with a penalty included. Once more, VAR told him to rethink his decision.

It’s alarming to see someone as mild-mannered as Liverpool’s number 1 be sent off twice in one game. But the right decision was reached both times.

Some Liverpool fans took to Twitter to give their views on the incidents. One fan suggested the referee’s allegiances may lie with another Premier League club.

How did Alisson react

Alisson was full of praise for the technology after the game and said the episode showed “once again the importance of using VAR in football.”

He also praised his teammates for coming to his defence and encouraging the referee to consult the video assistant.

Of course from a Liverpool point of view, a suspension would have been no bad thing. Brazil play again on Wednesday morning. Alisson sitting out of that one would have likely been well received from Liverpool’s department.

But Brazil coach Tite likes to rotate his goalkeepers options anyway. Maybe it’s best if Alisson sits out the next one.
