22-year-old signs new contract with current club, after claims Liverpool were in talks to sign him

Reported Liverpool target Cody Gakpo has signed a contract extension with PSV.

The 22-year-old has previously been claimed to have held ‘exploratory talks’ with both Liverpool and Manchester City.

In the original report from Voetbal International, it was said that Gakpo was in discussions to extend his current deal. In that respect, things are going as expected.

It was also claimed that, regardless of any contract developments, there was a ‘good chance’ of the player leaving Holland this summer.

The Dutchman has agreed to a further year at PSV. His previous deal would have expired in 2025. The new deal will do so in 2026.

What does it mean for Liverpool

If Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Gakpo then this won’t be a surprise to them. The player is from the PSV academy and is obviously on very good terms with the club.

That can mean two things. Firstly that PSV are aware of his ambitions and willing to accept his desire to play at a higher level.

Secondly, that due to length of the contract, the price any potential buyer will have to pay has just gone up.

Of course it may be that Liverpool’s interest doesn’t go any further than “talks”. The Reds are reportedly close to signing Porto’s Luis Diaz (The Athletic). Both players are primarily left-wingers.

However, Sadio Mane’s future is currently up for discussion. It could be that Liverpool go for both the 25-year-old Diaz and the 22-year-old Gakpo to cover the left side for the foreseeable future.

Diaz looks more likely to be brought in during the current transfer window. But it may be worth Liverpool fans keeping on top of how Gakpo does for the rest of the season. Any move for the Dutchman would surely have to wait until the summer.
