'Spectacular' Liverpool target Ronald Araujo reportedly rejects Barcelona

Ronald Araujo has reportedly rejected a new contract with Barcelona, amidst interest from Liverpool. The Uruguayan could be on his way out.

This comes from Marca. They say that Ronald Araujo has turned down a new contract from Barcelona, though negotiations will continue.

Araujo’s deal expires in 2023, making this a huge summer for him. No new deal and Barcelona will almost certainly cash in, creating interest abroad.

The Uruguayan wants more money, essentially. His rejection isn’t a sign that he’s definitely leaving, then, but it does suggest that Barcelona aren’t meeting his demands. They’ll have to up their bid or there’s a real chance they’ll lose a player Xavi consider ‘spectacular’.

Could Liverpool sign Ronald Araujo?

Sport reported this month that Liverpool are one club waiting in the wings if Araujo does choose to leave Barcelona. They’re not alone in that but these are links dating back some time now. If true, the Reds have been lining things up all season.

It’s a move that both makes sense and asks questions about Liverpool’s plans.

Araujo is currently shining for Barcelona at just 22. That understandably raises eyebrows as you rarely – if ever – get to sign those players away from the club. His small contract, and Barca’s financial struggles, make it possible, however.

Liverpool could sign a young but experienced defender, then, and at a cut-price fee as Barcelona need to sell. When you look at it that way – of course, they’re interested. There’s an obvious partnership with Ibrahima Konate, for one, a centre-back the same age as Araujo.

But at the same time, Liverpool already have four elite centre-backs – is there actually room for another? If not, signing Araujo would suggest someone is on their way out and that would presumably be Joe Gomez. The Englishman just hasn’t played much this season.

Replacing Gomez with Araujo is a questionable decision, even if there’s sense there. At the very least, it doesn’t exactly feel like a priority move right now.

So this is one to watch but there are still some necessary explanations. What’s clear, though, is that if Liverpool do want Araujo, him rejecting that Barcelona contract was a necessary first step.
