Niklas Sule will leave Bayern Munich when his contract ends this summer (The Telegraph). Still only 26-year-old, the centre-back will no doubt have a lengthy list of suitors.
One of those suitors should be Liverpool.
The Reds have been linked to both Ronaldo Araujo of Barcelona and Malick Thiaw of Schalke recently. It’s possible that Liverpool are exploring options at centre-back should they lose Joe Gomez.

Both of those players are considerably younger than Sule. But neither have the experience and ready-made quality of the German.
He hasn’t always been an undisputed starter since he joined Bayern in 2017. But he wouldn’t have to be at Liverpool either. In terms of a cut-price back-up option, it doesn’t get much better.
Long-held target
When Sule joined the German champions he was one of the brightest young central defenders in Europe. Prior to that, Jurgen Klopp reportedly wanted to bring him to Liverpool (Daily Mail).
At the time, Klopp was reported to believe Sule “to have the aggression and physical attributes to thrive in the Premier League.”

That’s certainly true. There aren’t many more imposing players in the game than the 6ft 5inch defender. Despite his frame, he’s also surprisingly quick.
Injury issues
His recent injury troubles however could count against him. Sule ruptured his ACL for a second time in October 2019. As a result, he missed most of Bayern’s sensational treble winning campaign and has struggled to hold down a starting spot since.
But Liverpool currently have two players in Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk who has recovered from the same injury in the past.

They know that players can return to their top level after recovering. Sule was barely 24-year-old when he had the injury, comfortably young enough to make a full recovery.
With 37 Germany caps, Sule is a vastly experienced winner with time still to improve. It isn’t every day a player like that becomes available. Liverpool should be all over it.
Bayern for their part wanted to keep him. If Liverpool can get one over on one of their biggest rivals for the Champions League, the more the better.
