Liverpool have a chance to get Rhys Williams back on track with a proposed loan deal. The 20-year-old was ‘exceptional’ last season.
Rhys Williams made himself a very exciting Liverpool talent last season. The centre-back came from nowhere to play a significant role as the Reds finished 3rd and while a lot of focus fell on Nat Phillips, Williams established himself as a prospect.
After all, here was a 20-year-old who held his own in massive games and earned ‘exceptional’ praise from Jurgen Klopp. How many centre-backs are securing Champions League finishes at that age? Remarkably few. Williams did it, though, but didn’t grow his reputation all that much.
A loan to Swansea City this season followed and we were excited for it. Unfortunately, things just didn’t work out. Williams is now back at Liverpool and looking for something new.
And maybe the right move is on its way.
Rhys Williams back at Liverpool
The Star claims that Sheffield United want Williams – and Phillips, for that matter. Now, we can’t imagine Phillips will drop down to the Championship as there’s reported Premier League interest. Williams, however, could be ideal.
The Blades sit in 11th right now and just about have Play-Off prospects. They’re doing so with Ben Davies at the back, on loan from Liverpool.

And perhaps that’s ideal for Williams. He could join a club that doesn’t carry too much pressure right now but is looking forwards. He’d also have a centre-back there that he knows well, having trained alongside Davies every week to finish last season.
On top of that, United’s apparent interest in multiple centre-backs tells is that they want to move towards a back three once again. It’s a formation that they’ve played at times this season and it’s one that may benefit the young Williams.
Having extra support there is exactly what he needs right now, while it’s also another spot in the starting XI for him. As he tries to find his upward momentum once again, Sheffield United might offer the perfect destination.
We think Williams is a great prospect in the right conditions. Hopefully, the Blades can offer him the best possible path.
