It looks like Joe Gomez is staying at Liverpool. Rumours have persisted that the London born centre-back could leave Anfield this month.
But those have seemingly been put to bed by GiveMeSport. Now it’s time to focus on matters on the pitch for Gomez.
The 24-year-old has started just four games for Liverpool this season. That’s despite Jurgen Klopp calling him ‘top class’ earlier in the campaign.
He has missed a few games due to injury. But by and large he has been available. There is no shame in being overlooked in favour of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip. However he will be frustrated that new signing Ibrahima Konate has jumped ahead of him in the pecking order.
Out in the cold
The latest sign that Gomez is out of favour came against Arsenal last night.
Matip was withdrawn at half-time after a sloppy display. With Arsenal not threatening too much, it looked like a good chance for Klopp to reignite the Van Dijk and Gomez partnership that was so good in Liverpool’s title-winning season.
It was also a chance to give minutes and a confidence boost to Gomez in a big game. Instead, Konate emerged for the second half in a clear sign of how Klopp views his options.
In some ways it makes sense. Konate is two years younger than Gomez and needs games under his belt. The 22-year-old has also been brilliant at times this season.
Gomez though, is too good to sit on the bench every week. Of course while Liverpool are playing well and keeping clean sheets there shouldn’t be a rush to change things. But he is in danger of a really promising Liverpool career fizzling out.
There is no doubt that should Klopp decide to sell him, the England international would command a big fee. Liverpool would surely be left kicking themselves though, as he has all the ability to go on and become a top player somewhere else, if he isn’t used more regularly soon.
