Joe Gomez will be staying at Liverpool for the time being, according to Peter O’Rourke’s comments on GiveMeSport. The centre-back has barely played for The Reds this season, which has led to speculation that he could be on his way out of the club with Real Madrid claimed to be monitoring his situation (BBC Sport).
Jurgen Klopp was forced to deny those rumours at the end of last year. He said: “We are patient and I think Joe is patient now as well, that’s the situation. I don’t have any plans to give anybody on loan in the winter, so I will not be the driving force.”
But nevertheless, the rumblings that Gomez isn’t totally happy have continued.
Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa have recently been reported as being a possible destination (The Athletic). But O’Rourke has today echoed Klopp’s comments, telling GiveMeSport “From what I’ve been told, Joe Gomez is staying at Liverpool, he won’t be going anywhere”.
Time on his side
That’s good news for Liverpool fans.
Although Gomez has found himself behind Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate this season, he is still a player with enormous potential.
His time at the club has unfortunately been interrupted by injuries. He was set to play a massive role last season after Van Dijk’s season ending injury in September. But just weeks later he suffered his own setback which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.
As a result we have barely seen the 24-year-old in a Liverpool shirt for 18 months. He is still young enough to be considered an eventual successor to either Van Dijk or Matip. But his career feels like it is stagnating a little.
It’s pleasing that he won’t be on the move during this window. Liverpool are still fighting on four fronts after reaching the Carabao Cup final. But with a World Cup to come in less than a year and Gomez somewhat frozen out of the England squad, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see these rumours resurfacing in the summer.
