Liverpool fans say Reds ‘so much better’ with Curtis Jones in the XI

Curtis Jones caught the eye against Brentford for many Liverpool fans. The Scouser started in midfield at Anfield.

Liverpool eventually walked to a 3-0 win against Brentford on Sunday afternoon. The Reds managed to do it with several stars missing, too, in a very different game to the Arsenal draw.

The team pushed forward faster, got the ball into the box more, and just kept the pressure on for the entire game. This was a more progressive Liverpool – one that moved the ball with purpose.

And certainly, one reason for that was Liverpool starting Curtis Jones. The Scouser lined up on the left of the midfield three and while he had a very quiet first half, things livened up in the second.

Jones looked to move the ball forward every time he got it. He carried it confidently and tried riskier passes – rather than the safe options he’d been taking in the first 45.

This wasn’t the perfect performance by any means but Liverpool did look better with Jones in there. Particularly in that second half, they just looked more confident and inventive.

This is something fans called for after his cameo against Arsenal and we’d say Jones delivered. That’s certainly the impression a lot of fans got watching this.

We’ll say it again – we don’t think Jones was particularly great here. But the drive he brings the team – even in a subpar performance – is enough to make Liverpool look better.

Jones is, after all, a player with enormous talent at progressing the ball. Liverpool need that in their midfield, especially when Thiago and Naby Keita are missing.

So we’d like to see him keep his place at the Emirates on Thursday. This could end up being an important period in his growth, right at a time when Jurgen Klopp wants him to take extra steps towards his potential.
