Jurgen Klopp believes it’s time for Curtis Jones to reach his ‘incredible potential’ at Liverpool. The 20-year-old has special talent.
Curtis Jones burst onto the scene two years ago, managing to make a name for himself as Liverpool charged towards the title. Not that Jones had too much impact on that – his role was in the cup competitions.
First came a winning penalty in the EFL Cup against Arsenal. It was a huge moment for Jones that really put him on the Liverpool map. But it was his winning goal against Everton in the FA Cup in January 2020 that let the world know there was a special player here.
Fast-forward to now and Jones is still a player of potential, rather than proven quality. He’s still only 20, of course, so that’s to be expected but the Scouser hasn’t entirely clicked at first-team level.
And Jurgen Klopp, it seems, feels the time is here for Jones to fulfil his ‘incredible potential’ with Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp on Curtis Jones at Liverpool
“I love the boy, I love the potential he has but we have to come now there where we really make the next steps [so] that he fulfils the potential he has on the pitch very often,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com.
“You have these kinds of conversations when you are not 100 per cent happy with the moment. He is young, very young. But how I see, his potential is incredible.
“We both together have to find a way to show that much more often. We are there really in this development.”

There shouldn’t be any doubt that Jones has that potential. We’ve seen it, for one thing, both in data and performances.
His display against Porto this season was magnificent, while certain metrics paint him as a world-class player in waiting. We all know Jones has the talent – and no one more than Klopp.
We just don’t quite see it enough. As brilliant as Jones’s talent is, he’s not putting it to use consistently enough and Klopp clearly believes he needs a nudge.
There’s a good chance Jones starts against Brentford today – so it won’t be long before we see if Klopp’s words have an effect.
