Neco Williams had Liverpool fans talking about him after a cameo against Arsenal last night. The 20-year-old is in a tricky place at the club.
Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t have his best game against Arsenal. In fact, it was the rarest of rares as he didn’t actually create a chance at Anfield. We can’t remember the last time that happened.
But as Jurgen Klopp said after the game, we’ve got to cut him some slack. The Scouser was out with Covid-19 and hasn’t immediately returned to his best – we might not see peak Alexander-Arnold for another couple of games.
What that meant was Neco Williams getting on the pitch for Liverpool. He’s Alexander-Arnold’s backup, after all, even if we rarely see him in Red.
Williams played the last 15 minutes and put in a fine performance. Enough that fans were quick to hail the youngster after the game.
Neco Williams shines for Liverpool vs Arsenal
There wasn’t too much for Liverpool to shout about coming out of this one. Curtis Jones was a positive, though, as was Williams.
The two of them entered the fray to show some much-needed drive. They attempted to force things to happen against the deep Arsenal defence. Jones, for instance, attempted over a third of Liverpool’s dribbles in the game despite only playing for half an hour.
Williams, too, was happy to run at players. He created some chaos that Alexander-Arnold couldn’t, consistently putting dangerous deliveries into the box and running hard.
Honestly, we’ve been really impressed with Williams whenever he’s played this season. The Welshman is in a tough spot behind Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order but there is a special talent here.
And even if, for now, Liverpool just use Williams as an injection of energy into games, we think he’s got a useful role. If he wants it.
