It’s Liverpool vs Arsenal later today and we think Caoimhin Kelleher should start for the Reds. The Irishman can grow from a start here.
Fortunately, Liverpool have a fairly strong group of players to choose from this evening when they take on Arsenal. The Reds won’t have Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, Thiago, Divock Origi or Harvey Elliott – but the rest looks good.
Jurgen Klopp can still call on senior players in nearly every position. In most places, he can call on his first choice. But we think he should opt for his no.2 in goal.
Caoimhin Kelleher could really benefit from a starting role at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Arsenal
Alisson is back in training and for an EFL Cup semi-final, it’s very easy to throw him back in. We’re talking about a ‘world-class’ player, in Klopp’s words, and he gives Liverpool their best chance of progression.
And perhaps that should be the end of it. There’s a real opportunity to secure a trophy here and Liverpool can easily argue that their strongest XI should play.
But Kelleher could really benefit from a start here. He’s been Liverpool’s goalkeeper in the cups, of course, while he’s deputised for Alisson well while the Brazilian was out.
Kelleher really needs more high-pressure games, though. They’re what can push him onto the next level and while he did get one against Chelsea recently, we’re not sure that’s quite enough.
We know how highly Liverpool rate the Irishman. Klopp has called him an ‘exceptional’ player in the past and one who could become a top-class player in his own right. Kelleher just needs the right building blocks to get him there.
And so Liverpool’s fourth-tier competition is a brilliant chance to give Kelleher just that. If Klopp gives him the nod, the 22-year-old can move one step closer to being another elite asset in the Reds’ squad.
They just need to put faith in him.
