Report: Liverpool-linked Ousmane Dembele wants £25m-per-year contract

Liverpool-linked Ousmane Dembele wants a massive contract in 2022, according to reports. The Barcelona winger is out of contract this year.

This comes from Sky Sports. Journalist Alvaro Montero tells them that Ousmane Dembele requested £25m per year from Barcelona to renew his contract this year.

Barcelona said no, however, and as things stand, Dembele will leave the club in the summer at the end of his deal. They’re not happy about that, though, with Xavi really talking up the Frenchman in recent weeks.

“For me, Dembele, he can be the best player in the world in his position,” he said in November.

Dembele’s imminent availability has several clubs interested, of course. Sky only really name Manchester United and Newcastle United but reports in 2021 linked Liverpool with interest. The likes of Cuatro and Sport are among those linking the Reds.

One to watch, then?

Liverpool to move for Ousmane Dembele?

Well, no, not at that price. We’ve written before that Dembele would be a tremendous risk to take but for £25m per year? That’s a £100m investment over a four-year contract – before bonuses and agent fees.

One Player Who Should REJECT Your Club

Dembele’s injury history just isn’t worth that chance, at least not for Liverpool in their current state. They need proper reinforcements to carry them into their next era, while the Barcelona man could end up flopping as he has in Catalonia.

It’s a risk that’s likely far more enticing for a team like Newcastle. If things go right, they could end up with a world-class player who carries them to new heights. If they don’t, Dembele would still be one of their better players.

Manchester United’s interest seems pretty bizarre, on the other hand, but if they want to sink £25m a year into Dembele, Liverpool should let them. This just isn’t what Liverpool need right now.
