Star man out for the foreseeable future

Juventus have confirmed that Federico Chiesa suffered an ACL knee injury on Sunday. The Italians beat Roma 4-3 in a thrilling game which was soured by the first half injury to their star man. He is expected to be out until at least September.

This could be significant news for Liverpool. According to La Repubblica The Reds made a huge bid of around £86m for Chiesa last summer. The Euro 2020 winner is still on loan from Fiorentina. Juventus retain an obligation to buy the Italian at the end of this season.

Liverpool interest likely to fade

Liverpool’s interest in Chiesa appears to be genuine. He is a fast and direct forward who can play on either side or through the middle. The fee would be enormous but investment in the squad is necessary over the next few years. Before the injury he looked like a player almost tailor-made for Jurgen Klopp’s system.

But this setback will likely bring an end to Liverpool’s interest. It would be a shock to see any team spend such a large fee on a player who would be injured at the time of signing and may take a full season to get back up to speed.

Chiesa will still only be 24-years-old by the time he returns to action. But given the explosive nature of his game, it could be a while until he is back to playing at the same level.

One Player Who Should REJECT Your Club

Having come back from a similar injury in the summer, Virgil Van Dijk still looks a little way from his best for Liverpool. He doesn’t rely on pace or change of direction nearly as much as someone like Chiesa, which doesn’t bode well.

Time to explore other options

It isn’t completely out of the question that Liverpool rate Chiesa so highly that they’re prepared to follow through on their interest regardless. Bayern Munich faced a similar situation with Leroy Sane in 2020, although he former Manchester City man has blown hot and cold in Germany.

Pre-injury Chiesa may have been the perfect signing. It’s unfortunate, but Liverpool will have a list of options to fall back on.
