Liverpool teenager Tyler Morton says Leicester City playmaker James Maddison is the best he’s played against so far. The England international certainly left an impression.
No one expected Tyler Morton to feature in a prominent role for Liverpool this season. Injuries and absences, however, forced him into the setup – with very promising results.
He’s started games against Preston North End, FC Porto, AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City. To Morton’s great credit, Liverpool won the first two before drawing the latter pair. He’s fit right in.
So that’s a lot of talent that Morton has come up against. Who’s the best, though? According to the 19-year-old, there’s a clear answer.
“When you play you’ve got all the players around you, so to be decent he’s got to beat me and someone else next to me because at Liverpool especially it’s never one-v-one, you’ve always got your mate helping you or someone helping you,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“Especially when you’re young, people know that, especially the experienced ones, they know that they need to help the youngster out.
“So, probably Maddison; a very good player, James Maddison, just because of his movement and his cleverness.”
Tyler Morton vs James Maddison
We can see why Morton would make this pick. He only played the first 45 minutes against Leicester but Maddison ran rampant, assisting their first goal for Jamie Vardy inside 10 minutes.
But his truly special moment came on 33 minutes as Maddison unleashed an absolute rocket to make it 3-1 Leicester. It was a sensational strike.
Morton struggled – as did Liverpool as a whole – before coming off at half-time. We’ll call that one a learning experience as on the whole, the midfielder has looked very promising.
And the players he faces who give him as hard a time as Maddison did, the better Morton should become. Let alone the world-class players he trains with every day.
