Liverpool won’t sanction a cheap Divock Origi transfer after seeing what Newcastle United paid for Kieran Trippier, according to reports.

This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They say Newcastle United raised eyebrows at Liverpool as they completed a transfer for Kieran Trippier.

The Magpies paid an initial £12m for Trippier, says the report. That could grow to £25m with add-ons – a fairly high price considering the circumstances. The England right-back is now 31 and only had six months remaining on his contract.

Atletico Madrid did have an option to extend his deal for another 12 months but selling now was always going to appeal. Securing a potential £25m in that situation is pretty decent, then.

It’s especially relevant to Liverpool as Divock Origi is in exactly the same situation. His contract expires in six months but the Reds can extend it for another 12. Selling now could save a summer headache – but they’d want a decent price.

Origi is five years younger than Trippier, after all, even if he doesn’t play anywhere near as regularly. He’s potentially a long-term option for a team like Newcastle, who do reportedly want him.

The Telegraph claimed yesterday that Newcastle had eyes on Origi. They also wrote that Liverpool would accept a figure as low as £7m this month.

That always felt incredibly low for us and we also couldn’t understand selling Origi without a replacement. £7m wouldn’t go very far to securing a replacement, either.

But it sounds as though this Trippier transfer is ammunition for Liverpool to raise their asking price. They won’t sell a player five years younger than the full-back for a considerably smaller fee.

We wonder if it could affect Origi in other ways, too. Newcastle have shown they’re open to potentially doubling a transfer fee in add-ons and that could help Liverpool secure a bigger fee for the Belgian.

After all, Origi is a player who could explode in value with regular football.
