Returning Curtis Jones set for ‘very important’ Liverpool role in January

Curtis Jones is ready to return for Liverpool, says Jurgen Klopp. In fact, the Scouser appears to have a ‘very important’ role to play.

It’s now over two months since we last saw Curtis Jones in action for Liverpool – October 30th against Brighton, to be precise. An eye injury, followed by Covid-19, have kept him out of the picture for a long time now.

But Jones is back, says Jurgen Klopp. More than that, he appears to have a ‘very important’ role in mind for the 20-year-old already.

“Yes, it’s cool to have him back,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com. “Especially with the Thiago situation, Naby [Keita] situation from the 3rd [of January] on and all these kind of things.

“Very important for us, really happy and he looks good.”

As for those situations, Thiago remains injured for Liverpool, while Keita will leave for the Africa Cup of Nations after Sunday’s game with Chelsea. It appears Jones will be the go-to in their absence – which makes a lot of sense.

We’ve been very vocal lately about Thiago’s role at Liverpool. In short, the Reds are much better with him in the side as he’s simply a magnificent progressive midfielder. Thiago can get the entire team moving in the right direction, slicing defences open.

Without him, Liverpool lack a player who can trouble defences from deep in midfield. It’s why believe Keita should play when Thiago can’t. Keita doesn’t pass the ball the same but he can progress excellently by dribbling and carrying.

Without both out, however, Liverpool have a problem. Jones probably is the best-placed to fix it, though, and we think Klopp is on to something here.

Jones is a fantastic progressive midfielder in his own right, even if he isn’t quite as proven as Keita and a long ways from Thiago. In fact, certain metrics paint him as a potential superstar.

And we’ve seen what the 20-year-old can bring already this season. With Liverpool lacking both Thiago and Keita, Jones is undoubtedly their best shot at a progressive, ball carrying midfielder. It certainly sounds as though Klopp sees it that way and he could keep Liverpool productive over the next month.
