Liverpool must turn to Naby Keita on Sunday vs Chelsea after another injury blow. The Reds will be without at least one key player.
Liverpool will have to be ‘patient’ with Thiago, says Jurgen Klopp. The Spaniard, who has missed games with both Covid-19 and injury in recent weeks, has a hip problem that’s confusing the club.
“Thiago, not yet,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com. “It means for him, it might take a little bit longer.
“It’s a hip issue which we don’t have an idea where it’s coming from, so we have to be a little bit patient with that.”
That’s a big blow. Thiago has been sensational over the last few months, establishing himself beyond doubt for Liverpool.
And the Reds need that. Thiago is the one who can move the ball through midfield, pulling teams apart and ensuring that Liverpool can play between the lines. It’s a vital role that makes the team a lot more dangerous.
Without him, Liverpool can struggle to break down defences. And that’s why they must turn to one player, in particular, vs Chelsea.
Liverpool must turn to Naby Keita vs Chelsea
Keita filled in for Thiago against Tottenham Hotspur a couple of weeks ago with success. He carried the ball well, passed it well, and offered enough defensively – especially with his pressing.
Keita certainly impressed us and that’s why we thought it was a mistake that he didn’t start for Liverpool against Leicester with Thiago out again.
Because Keita is Liverpool’s best alternative to Thiago. He can progress the ball to a high level when he’s at his best, pulling defenders apart in similar ways to the Spaniard.
The only unfortunate thing is that Keita will disappear after the Chelsea fixture to play at the Africa Cup of Nations. While he’s here, Liverpool should undoubtedly turn to him.
