It appears Liverpool will face transfer battles against Newcastle United in 2022. Both teams are linked with several players.
The January transfer window is almost upon us and that means one thing – lots and lots of links to players. Liverpool supposedly want everyone under the sun right now, across several positions.
Three stand out from yesterday. There was Aguibou Camara, a Guinean midfielder at Olympiacos as reported by Foot Mercato. The Press and Journal believe Liverpool want Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen – an 18-year-old right-back who looks seriously impressive. Finally, 90min link the Reds with Ousmane Dembele, who appears set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer.
They’re three transfers that make sense to varying degrees but they also all have something else in common – Newcastle United.
Liverpool face transfer competition from Newcastle
Now, it’s certainly easy to link Newcastle with players right now. They’re flush with cash, whether we like it or not, and will be on the lookout for new players.
And in all honesty, they probably will shop in a remarkably similar market to Liverpool. That seems strange on the face of it, given the difference in their respective standings but it’s just how the Reds do business.
Liverpool don’t typically shop at the elite market, Thiago aside, and look for players on the up that they can improve. Essentially their entire squad arrived that way.
It’s a similar strategy to Newcastle, who want players emerging to build their new side, knowing full well they can’t yet attract the very best. If they can’t sign world-class players, they’ll sign players who could be one day.
So we expect Liverpool to bump into Newcastle quite a bit over the next few transfer windows and beyond. It’ll be frustrating and the Reds may lose certain targets to sheer financial power but it’s the new reality.
