Xherdan Shaqiri reportedly transfer listed just months after Liverpool exit

One former Liverpool player is already on the transfer list just four months after leaving Anfield. Xherdan Shaqiri is having a tough time.

This comes from L’Equipe. They claim that Lyon hope to move on from Xherdan Shaqiri in January, just months after signing the player from Liverpool.

The French side paid £8.5m to bring in Shaqiri last August, with the Swiss playmaker lacking opportunities at Anfield. It was a transfer that made complete sense – or at least, it seemed that way.

Four months later, however, is appears Shaqiri really, really wasn’t what Lyon were looking for. They hope to move him on now, which is no easy feat as he’s a highly-paid player.

Liverpool transfer shows off potential problem

It took Liverpool a while to sell Xherdan Shaqiri and in the end, it wasn’t for a particularly high price. The fact that Lyon still feel they got things wrong shows how difficult it is to sell players right now.

At least, it’s very difficult to sell squad players. If Lyon had judged this one right, Shaqiri would likely still be with Liverpool. Players don’t get particularly long to prove themselves when arriving as first-team options.

And there will likely be other squad players Liverpool look to sell. Nat Phillips comes to mind, a player we see as a potential bargain for Premier League sides. But is a squad player like that – one with even fewer opportunities than Shaqiri – going to sell for a decent price?

It promises to be an interesting 2022, then. Liverpool do have quite a few players who aren’t playing right now and that might mean looking for offers next year. If Shaqiri’s deal is anything to go by, though, that won’t be a simple task at all.
