Liverpool won’t find a transfer with higher potential than Ousmane Dembele this summer. But is it one they should take a chance on?
It appears that Ousmane Dembele could leave Barcelona for nothing in the summer. His contract expires and per many sources, such as Fabrizio Romano, report that the situation is now ‘complicated’. The Frenchman wants a certain amount of money to re-sign but the Catalonians aren’t willing to give him that.
Naturally, that has clubs interested. Romano says two English sides have already made contact and 90min believes Liverpool are looking into it.
Whether that’s true or not, it’s a deal that makes sense for the Reds. Liverpool won’t find a transfer with more upside than this.
Liverpool won’t find a better transfer than Ousmane Dembele
Dembele is still only 24 and his potential remains enormous. He’s rapid, excels with both feet, and is capable of producing magic moments. Liverpool will look at him and believe there’s a lot to unlock and that they may know how to get it done.
You essentially never get players this good without a transfer fee. Certainly not at this stage in their career.
And so if this went right, Liverpool could end up with a world-class player who can operate on both flanks and without paying a transfer fee. That’s the upside here – and it doesn’t really get better.
Then comes the downside, however. Dembele clearly wants a lot of money if Barcelona can’t meet his demands, while his injury record over the last few years is terrible. He’ll have one full season followed by a campaign where he’s almost constantly injured.
If this went wrong, it’s a lot of wasted money in wages – and a lost opportunity to sign the right player.
It’ll come down to who’s willing to take the risk, then. We can’t see Liverpool taking it as they tend to play transfer incredibly safe. Someone like Newcastle United, however, may jump at the chance to give Dembele what he wants.
