Chelsea have suffered another injury blow ahead of the game with Liverpool on Sunday. Reece James being absent sets the stage for Sadio Mane.
Chelsea drew 1-1 with Brighton on Wednesday evening – not their ideal preparation for Liverpool. Even worse, they suffered an injury blow.
Reece James went off for Chelsea with an apparent hamstring injury in the first half after a collision with Yves Bissouma. That makes him a major doubt to face Liverpool just a few days later. And that’s hardly all the Blues need to deal with.
Ben Chilwell is out for the season after knee surgery, while Andreas Christensen went off at half-time against Brighton. It remains to be seen if Christensen is able to face Liverpool but Chilwell is definitely out and we imagine James is, too.
And that hands Sadio Mane a chance to turn his Liverpool form around.
Chelsea suffer injury blows ahead of Liverpool
Sadio Mane hasn’t been in good form for Liverpool of late. In fact, he’s nine games without a goal or assist right now – his worse run for a long, long time. That’s not entirely his fault, though, as Mane just hasn’t had things go his way since a wonderful display against Arsenal.
But with Reece James missing for Chelsea, Mane would get a perfect opportunity to find his form. This is a huge game with title implications and a glorious stage for the Reds’ no.10 to set things right.
And the Blues will be weak down his flank, with their best right-back missing. If Christensen is out, too, then Chelsea will find it even more difficult to move players around as cover. Thomas Tuchel can’t really afford to just sit back and shut up shop, either – they need to win this.
So Mane should have his chance to not only end this nine-game scoreless run but assert himself in this title race. Fingers crossed he delivers his best.
