Liverpool only made one signing in the summer of 2021 – Ibrahima Konate. The Reds brought in a player with outrageous potential, however.
Do you need more than one signing when that one signing looks like a superstar? In most cases, no, but many will argue that Liverpool still need more squad depth elsewhere.
But no one can look back and say Liverpool wasted money in 2021. Not when the one player they did sign was Ibrahima Konate – a player of incredible potential.
Honestly, it was clear from the moment Liverpool signed Konate for £36m that they were getting someone who could become an elite player. But there was still a lot of hope, rather than genuine expectation. Would Konate actually click with Liverpool? Would he get games? There were plenty of questions hanging over the 22-year-old.
Liverpool land a star in Konate
Well after half a season of football, we now have an idea of Konate’s fit and what he can bring to Liverpool. It’s hard to see a single negative.
Konate already looks like a fantastic centre-back, helping Liverpool to win 5-0 at Old Trafford with a brilliant performance, to name but one game. We’ve seen him thrive in games where teams targeted him, too, while he earned praise from Zlatan Ibrahimovic against AC Milan.
The Frenchman just seems to have every attribute you want from a centre-back. Konate is comfortable on the ball (87% pass completion this season), he’s athletic enough to sweep up behind, strong enough to win headers, and smart enough to defend against the world’s best forwards.
And he’s 22! Liverpool really do appear to have a worldie in Konate and that £36m could well end up being a steal. All that’s left now is making sure he gets enough games in among Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.
Develop him right and we’re surely looking at one of the world’s best.
