Liverpool need luck to avoid triple blow in reschuled Leeds fixture

Liverpool need some luck on their side to avoid a triple blow in their Leeds United fixture this season. AFCON could prove very troublesome.

Liverpool confirmed on Thursday that they won’t face Leeds United on Boxing Day. It’s a blow to the Christmas schedule but an understandable one – Leeds just have too many positive Covid-19 cases.

Now, in the short term, we imagine Jurgen Klopp welcomes this. The Liverpool boss had been vocal about his displeasure over games on both the 26th and 28th of December, believing it was ‘extraordinary’ that the games were going ahead.

His Liverpool team now gets proper rest between the two Leicester City games, though. He’ll welcome that, as well as the possibility that it’s one fewer game that Liverpool’s own positive Covid-19 cases miss.

But this does come with some negatives. For starters, Andy Robertson will now miss the Chelsea game through suspension, rather than the Leeds game. That’s a blow, given the size of that game at Stamford Bridge.

And there’s potentially another blow here.

AFCON could hit Liverpool vs Leeds

We don’t yet know when this game gets rescheduled to. We assume the Premier League wants it out of the way soon, though, to rule out potential fixture pile-up later in the season.

Potential dates include January 19th – though it’s a squeeze – or cutting into the winter break at the end of January/early February. Both would be awkward for Liverpool, though.

Both potential dates would happen during the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially ruling out Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita. That’s obviously far from ideal.

Now, the later the rescheduled game happens, the higher the chance that those players are back from AFCON. Perhaps the tournament is over – or perhaps they’re just eliminated. Either way, Liverpool depend on luck.

Luck of the Premier League’s chosen date or luck from the likes of Egypt not making the final. While the initial postponement is positive for the squad, the eventual date could hit them hard.
