Real Madrid want Joe Gomez, according to reports, and reported transfer interest from Liverpool will give them hope. The Reds may be covering all options.
The BBC claimed on Wednesday that Real Madrid want Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in 2022. They believe a summer transfer could happen and are monitoring the situation.
It would be a bit of a shock, in truth. Gomez was a regular starter in a record-breaking Liverpool team two years ago that walked to the Premier League title. Going from that to a sale within two years would be unheard of for this Reds side.
But then, perhaps Liverpool are already looking in that direction. There have been links in recent weeks that point to a possible replacement.
Liverpool target replacement transfer?
Araujo is clearly an exciting talent, playing well for a struggling Barcelona side at just 22. His potential seems huge and a contract that expires in 2023 means he could be available on the cheap next year.
The confusion stems from Liverpool not really needing a centre-back, though. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Gomez are all great players, while Ibrahima Konate continues to shine, too.
But it’s a deal that makes an awful lot of sense if Liverpool would consider a transfer for Gomez. Perhaps their interest in Araujo points in that direction, then, with the Reds wanting another future-proof signing as a replacement and a long-term partner for Konate.
We said last month that the Araujo reports brought about questions around Gomez’s long-term future at Liverpool. Perhaps that reported interest from Real Madrid is the answer we were looking for.
