‘Best atmosphere in England’: Leicester player raves about Anfield

James Maddison has lavished praise on the Anfield atmosphere. The England international took to Instagram to make the comments after his Leicester side were beaten on penalties on Wednesday night.

“Cruel end to a great game at the stadium with the best atmosphere in England. Tough one to take!” wrote Maddison.

He had earlier silenced the stadium with a stunning strike at The Kop end to put Leicester 3-1 up. But Liverpool roared back in the second half to progress to the Carabao Cup semi final. Arsenal await.

The Anfield crowd could be forgiven for being a bit quiet for this one. Liverpool were far from full strength and, after such a poor first half, it looked like a case of damage limitation.

The half-time introductions of Ibou Konate, James Milner and Diogo Jota changed all that, however. Jota looked especially determined to turn the game around. His passion and tenacity helped to raise the temperature of the crowd.

Ironically, Maddison was probably responsible for adding some ferocity to the stands too. His celebration in front of The Kop certainly made the crowd hungry for revenge.

They got it, too, through Jota and then Minamino before Kelleher’s heroics won them the shoot-out.

Leicester aren’t the first side to be stung by the power of the Liverpool home support and they won’t be the last.

Maddison’s words are a reminder of what an impact the crowd can have on visiting teams at Anfield. We sometimes take it for granted but there’s no better place in football for late comebacks like the one we witnessed last night.
