Data suggests that Liverpool have the best front three in the Premier League right now – and almost certainly the world. The Reds have something very special.
Do Liverpool have the best front three in the world right now? It’s hard to argue against, with all of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane playing wonderfully well.
Salah, for instance, leads both the goals and assists charts in the Premier League right now. Jota then sits in second for goals – the only two players in double digits.
Mane isn’t quite finding the same numbers as his Liverpool teammates but that isn’t to say he’s struggling. In fact, data suggests these three are comfortably the best trio around.
Data highlights strength of Liverpool trio
FBref tweeted out a wonderful stat on Wednesday. They say that Jota, Salah and Mane boast the highest non-penalty expected goals in the Premier League this season. They’re the top three, with fourth-place Jamie Vardy a distant 2.9 xG behind Mane.
And it’s true – those three are a level above everyone else right now. It’s not just a matter of having played lots, either, as they’re three of the top four in npxG per 90. Only Timo Werner fits his way between them, taking up third spot with around 33% of the minutes Mane has managed.
What’s even crazier, though, is that Jota, Salah and Mane remain the top three when you add expected assists. Again, no one really comes close, with 2.8 goals separating Michail Antonio in fourth from Mane.
There simply isn’t a front three that operates on anything like this level. Liverpool’s trio are utterly dominant, scoring and creating goals at a higher rate individually than anyone else in the Premier League.
Liverpool have built something remarkable here. If they can stay fit and secure their defence, it’s hard to see how anyone will contend with them in 2022.
