Real Madrid have eyes on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to reports. Los Blancos feel he could be available in 2022.
This comes from the BBC. They claim that Real Madrid have Joe Gomez on their shortlist as they feel Liverpool could sell at the end of the season.
That’s mainly because of Ibrahima Konate. The increased competition could see Gomez and Liverpool decide a transfer makes sense – but only if he’s not getting in the side.
Real Madrid want Joe Gomez
Not exactly lots to go off here but it does make sense. Gomez is a wonderful defender who rightly attracts attention from elite clubs. At the same time, there is a sense that Konate’s early form has forced the England man down to fourth-choice.
But we also think talk like this is pretty premature. Gomez has only three starts this season but that’s largely because of an injury – without that, we’d have seen the 24-year-old far more.
Real Madrid are right to monitor the situation, though. There is at least half a chance that as we don’t really know what Gomez thinks of being down the pecking order.
He was, after all, starting for Liverpool every week as they won the title two years ago. Dropping from that to fourth-choice at 24 will be hard to take as these should really be some of his prime years.
But there is a sense that Gomez’s future at Liverpool is still solid. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are considerably older than Gomez and Konate – the latter duo should completely take over before too long. If Gomez is willing to wait, there’s a wonderful place in the squad for him.
It just depends on whether he’s willing to wait. And if a club the size of Real Madrid is offering him a starring role, Liverpool might just see his head turned this summer.
