Rumours recently circulated in Brazil that Liverpool owners FSG tried to buy Brazilian club Cruzeiro. An investment partner in the takeover addressed the rumours this week.

Cruzeiro have a new owner and it’s one you’ve heard of – Ronaldo. Not Cristiano, of course, but their former player and legendary striker.

Ronaldo is part of a group that purchased the club, with the Brazil icon the natural face of it. It’s a new dawn for them, then, as Cruzeiro look to make waves in South America.

But could FSG have purchased the club? The Liverpool owners were heavily rumoured to have made an offer themselves before being rejected. Now Pedro Mesquita, partner at XP Investimentos who made the deal happen, has addressed those rumours.

Did Liverpool owners FSG try to buy Cruzeiro?

“There was never Liverpool, there was never any negotiation with Liverpool,” Mesquita told Super Esportes. “In fact, there was an attempt on our side, but Liverpool declined any interest in Cruzeiro.

“This situation by Liverpool came out on the internet due to a post from a fan who said that I I was in Boston, and the Boston Red Sox is in the same group as Liverpool. And they said I was negotiating with this group.”

So there was an approach to FSG but it was declined. That essentially puts that to bed, though it’s easy to see how those rumours formed.

It would have been an interesting situation, certainly. Brazilian football is the largest in South America and quietly one of the biggest leagues on the planet. Liverpool would have had a perfect partnership with a fairly major club over there – who knows where that could have led?

Instead, it wasn’t to be and Liverpool don’t have an ‘in’ in Brazil. A bit of a shame, really, though it certainly wouldn’t have led to more transfer funds.
