It appears Liverpool will get their shot at a reported transfer target in 2022. Jonathan David will be on the move to somewhere new.
L’Equipe have consistently reported that Liverpool want Lille striker Jonathan David. The French outlet mentioned a potential £30m deal a few weeks ago before claiming the Reds led any chase for the in-form Canadian.
Not that these are the first links. The Liverpool Echo is one outlet that claims David was an alternative to Diogo Jota in 2020.
If true, it appears Liverpool will get their chance next year. David’s agent, Nick Mavromaras, recently told Radio Canada that the player will spend this season with Lille but this will almost certainly be his last.
“For us, the goal is to finish the season with Lille, but this will be his last season there for several reasons,” he told the Tellement Soccer podcast. “I think the Premier League is a great option for him.
“I think he likes Spain a lot too… These two leagues are the main priorities for him, but nothing is being ruled out. You never know with Paris Saint-Germain or the big Italian clubs. It’s normal that all these big clubs are interested in the top scorer in Ligue 1, but I can tell you that, today, there’s no official offer.”
We imagine the ‘several reasons’ include Lille needing money – David will likely claim a decent price. In fact, we find it hard to believe that initial £30m price.
With the form he’s in Liverpool will surely have to make this one a statement signing.
Can Liverpool complete Jonathan David transfer?
We’re big fans of David, who continues to look like a perfect Liverpool signing. Honestly, we thought that around a year ago when he finally found form with Lille but this season proves it beyond all real doubt.
David currently tops the Ligue 1 scoring charts with 11 goals, two ahead of Kylian Mbappe. It’s the cherry on top of a fantastic all-around game that delivers what Liverpool like.
So if the 21-year-old truly is off in 2022, you can imagine Liverpool will get involved. This could end up being a major transfer for them.
