Liverpool really bucked a trend when they signed Thiago back in 2020. Fabinho, in discussing the Spaniard, summed up why they did it.
Thiago was a very unusual signing for Liverpool – in more ways than one. For starters, the Reds had never really signed a superstar at that level before. Thiago was right at the top of his game and unquestionably one of the world’s best midfielders.
They also took a player away from the European champions in doing so. Again, that’s a power-play that Liverpool hadn’t really done before.
But it was also an unusual deal purely because of Thiago’s age. He was 29 when Liverpool signed him – older than any other first-XI player signed for some time.
Paying £20m to make it happen was genuinely strange from the club and it does beg the question ‘why?’.
Why did Liverpool sign Thiago?
“Thiago is a really good player,” Fabinho recently told Liverpoolfc.com. “It’s not hard to adapt to a player like this.
“We’ve been playing together I don’t know how long now, but Thiago is someone easy to play with. We both speak Portuguese, so it’s something that can help us.
“I think in our position we can adapt to each other, with [Jordan Henderson] as well. I think for the team this is good because the midfield has an important role in this team.”
That just about sums it all up. Thiago is proving to be a wonderfully easy player to adapt to, with the midfield looking completely at home with him there. That’s not easy.
One look at Lionel Messi, for instance, shows that even the greatest of all time needs time to find their level. Sometimes, they need a lot of time. Time for them to adjust and for the team, too, but Liverpool and Thiago currently look like a match made in heaven.
That’s despite the Spaniard’s injury problems, despite a disjointed squad for his first season, and despite needing to adapt to a new country. Thiago has been incredible with the ease he’s fit in at Liverpool once he really got going.
And that’s why Liverpool bucked the trend to sign an ageing player. Thiago is something special, both in his talent and with how easy he is to play with.
