Divock Origi injury sums up his terrible luck at Liverpool

Divock Origi has another injury – and that about sums up his luck with Liverpool. The Belgian just can’t win sometimes.

Divock Origi has been a forgotten figure at Liverpool for some time, really, but 182 Premier League minutes last season will do that. Jurgen Klopp just hasn’t turned to him very often at all.

Or at least, he hadn’t before the last few weeks. Origi has forced his way into Liverpool’s thinking again with a couple of wonderful goals.

There was his strike against West Ham United before the international break. In a game where the Reds really struggled – it would be their only defeat this season, after all – Origi found a way to score.

He then got the winner against Wolves, of course, striking in the 94th minute in typical Origi style. A start in the Champions League against AC Milan again brought a goal.

And then the classic Origi thing happened – he got injured. Klopp confirmed on Wednesday that the Belgian is still absent and won’t face Newcastle United, after missing the game against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Divock Origi and his injury luck

Just as Origi starts making a mark, injury forces him out of the picture. It’s a common occurrence – those minutes we mentioned earlier are just as much down to injuries as being down the pecking order.

Origi signed a new contract in 2019 on the back of his Champions League heroics but injury after injury means no one has really benefitted from it. It’s certainly not like Liverpool didn’t plan on using him.

But you can trace this back to 2015. Origi looked like a phenomenon in Klopp’s first part-season, scoring several important goals and thriving. His goal away at Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League in that campaign was one of his first star strikes.

And then a terrible injury against Everton took him out of the XI for the rest of the season. We’ve only seen his best in bursts ever since and those are, like in 2015, usually ruined by injury.

Will Origi ever get over this problem? It feels unlikely at this stage but it’s yet another factor that leads to underestimating how good he really is.
