Liverpool face a decision on Denis Zakaria in the January transfer window, according to reports. The Swiss midfielder could be available at an interesting price.

This comes from Sport Bild. They claim that Borussia Monchengladbach could sell Denis Zakaria for around £7m in January.

Now, that’s clearly a very cheap price for a very talented midfielder. It does come with a decision for clubs, however, as Zakaria’s contract expires in the summer. Sign him for £7m now or wait and try to get him for free?

That’s the decision facing Liverpool, apparently. Fabrizio Romano is one of those claiming the Reds hold an interest in Zakaria.

So what does make sense for Liverpool?

Should Liverpool push for Denis Zakaria transfer?

Now we’ve written before that it makes some sense for Liverpool to wait. They do have an abundance of midfielders at the club, after all, and they’re all playing pretty well.

Thus adding another midfielder isn’t entirely necessary, even if Zakaria would improve the squad. If they can get him for nothing, that’s probably the better option here.

But that depends on no other clubs convincing Zakaria with a January transfer. That would force Liverpool to act or they’ll be too late.

The other interesting factor here is that we wrote that article when £8.5m was the quoted price. If there really has been a £1.5m drop, it suggests Gladbach may be quite eager to shift the Swiss while they can get a fee for him.

So is there potential for the price to drop further? It certainly sounds that way. Perhaps that’s the way to go here, then.

If £5m – or thereabouts – is attainable for a January transfer, we imagine Liverpool would want to move for Zakaria. £7.5m is a debatable bargain but there’s potential for an absolute steal here – with a bit of luck.
