Jurgen Klopp will return to magic ingredient that delivered the Premier League title

Jurgen Klopp returns to ingredient that made Liverpool champions

Jurgen Klopp will return to the ingredient that won Liverpool the Premier League title in 2020. Will it work two years later?

Jurgen Klopp made it clear on Friday that no one should expect sweeping rotation across December. While the fixture list is tough, he’ll back Liverpool players to push through it – unless the data says otherwise.

“Player welfare is important but we are used to a tough schedule,” he told a press conference.

“I don’t think we need to make too many changes at the start of December, maybe towards the middle. It’s about constant conversations with the medical department.

“We use all our data for the lineup. I wouldn’t expect 7/8 changes.”

And honestly, that’s wonderful to hear. Liverpool have a consistent selection of players for the first time in over a year and Klopp is ready to lean into that.

If he does, he’ll return to a strategy that helped deliver the Premier League title in 2020.

Jurgen Klopp returns to magic ingredient

While this December will be tough, it won’t have anything on December 2019. Liverpool played across four competitions that month and even had games on back-to-back days at one point.

Yet, Klopp stuck with largely the same group of players throughout that month. It was something of a hallmark that season – Liverpool’s teams were as consistent as possible, with little room for squad players.

Dejan Lovren played 777 minutes in the Premier League that season. Naby Keita got just 814 and Divock Origi 706. All are considerably under 10 games’ worth of minutes.

Consistency in the lineup led to consistency with results as the Reds continuously ground-out wins. It was incredibly impressive and, importantly, something they couldn’t do last season.

Injuries robbed Liverpool of that consistency, meaning Klopp had to shake things up every week. Those results were telling, too.

Now, though, things are finally back to ‘normal and Klopp can afford to lean into consistency once again. Will it deliver another Premier League title? We’re certainly feeling hopeful.
