A clear hero: Liverpool’s 3 best players from their late 1-0 win vs Wolves

Liverpool won 1-0 vs Wolves on Saturday afternoon with some late heroics. Here are our picks for the Reds’ three best players on the day.

Divock Origi

One place to start, obviously. Divock Origi came off the bench in this one and was instantly Liverpool’s most productive attacker vs Wolves

Jurgen Klopp actually shifted formation with the sub, taking off Jordan Henderson and going 4-2-4. Origi led the line, with Diogo Jota behind him.

The Belgian moved well with the ball, offered a physical presence up top and brought new confidence to the attack. That was confidence that Wolves had gradually taken away from Liverpool – Origi appeared unaffected by the struggles, though.

And that showed with his composure in stoppage time. Origi received the ball in the box with his back to goal but had it in him to take a moment. His spin was perfect, his finish was lethal, and Liverpool won the game.

We haven’t exactly seen much of Origi this season but this was a reminder of what he brings. An absolute hero.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

No Liverpool players had a perfect game here but Alexander-Arnold came close to showing his best form. The Scouser created four chances in this one and was bitterly unfortunate not to leave with another assist.

His cross for Diogo Jota’s first-half header was exquisite and you’re unlikely to see a better pass this weekend. He had his other moments going forward, too, even if nothing really came off.

Alexander-Arnold was one of the few Liverpool players who didn’t get dispossessed by Wolves (Mohamed Salah faced that unfortunate situation ten times). He also won himself a tackle, popped up with some solid defensive interceptions and made himself an option consistently.

But as we say, Liverpool didn’t have many who showed their true selves against Wolves. Alexander-Arnold just about did on a difficult night.

Thiago

As you might have noticed, Wolves are not a high-pressing team. They frequently have everyone back within their defensive 40 yards, looking to squeeze the space in dangerous areas, rather than stop attacks at the source.

It’s a game made for Thiago, then. He’s someone who can absolutely run the show if you give him space in deeper areas and that’s what happened.

Honestly, we thought Liverpool might lean into it a bit more against Wolves and have Thiago sit as more of a holding player. While they didn’t go that far, the Spaniard was still the playmaker here.

No one had more touches than Thiago (105) and he completed 88% of his passes. He certainly got Liverpool going, even if Wolves did a good job around their box.

Defensively, too, Thiago looked good as he won two tackles and made another two interceptions. He was surprisingly good with Adama Traore, in fact, despite the physical difference.

Another solid performance from Thiago, then. Not his best but an example of what he brings to Liverpool.
