Report backs up claims Liverpool plan to poach Ronald Araujo

Another report claims Liverpool are looking into a transfer for Ronald Araujo. The centre-back could leave Barcelona.

This comes from Sport. They claim that Barcelona are struggling to tie down Ronald Araujo to a long-term contract.

His current deal expires in 2023, meaning they may be forced to sell the player this summer. Given Araujo has established himself in the first-team squad, Barcelona will be incredibly reluctant to sell.

Interest from elsewhere applies a squeeze to their talks, too. Both Liverpool and Chelsea have eyes on Araujo, to no one’s surprise.

The 22-year-old is one of the few bright lights at Barcelona over the past 18 months. A hamstring injury disrupted his season last month but other than that, he’s been consistently in the team.

Araujo’s potential seems huge and, if Liverpool get lucky, he could be available on the cheap.

Liverpool looking into Ronald Araujo transfer

This is the second report to claim Liverpool want Araujo after ESPN said the same last week. You can read out initial thoughts on that one here.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

In short, it’s an interesting one. There’s a clear long-term partnership with Ibrahima Konate if Liverpool want it. Both are 22 and fairly established as top-flight players.

A move would ask questions over Joe Gomez, though, who we previously thought was the natural successor to Virgil van Dijk & Joel Matip. Perhaps he still is – but the question about his role is there.

It does seem that there’s some genuine interest in Araujo, though. Taking out other factors, few could doubt that he’d be a bargain signing with his potential what it is.

We imagine Liverpool would prioritise a signing like that over any other defenders, quite honestly. So if they do want another long-term centre-back, Araujo in 2022 would likely be their best option.

One to watch, certainly.
