Journalist claims Liverpool have made inquiry for Luis Diaz

Liverpool have made the first steps for a Luis Diaz transfer, according to one journalist. Several reports link the Reds with the Porto star.

This comes from Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra. He claims that Liverpool have put in an inquiry to Porto about Luis Diaz.

He names Liverpool among several clubs to have done so, with Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Everton also looking into his compatriot.

Now, Everton clearly stand out like a sore thumb there. The Toffees, however, tried to sign Diaz in the summer and their interest certainly won’t have gone away.

Diaz has 12 goals already this season while playing from the left-wing. He’s established himself as an elite player and only seems to get better. This is all after finishing as the joint-top goalscorer at Copa America alongside Lionel Messi.

Everton’s problem, then, is that the likes of Liverpool now want Diaz, too. In fact, several reports from Portugal claim the Reds are among the frontrunners.

Jornal de Notícias and Record are among those. The Colombian winger would admittedly be an ideal replacement for Sadio Mane when he disappears for AFCON this winter.

But how likely is a January transfer to Liverpool?

Luis Diaz to Liverpool?

Possibly the most interesting part of Sierra’s information is that Porto would talk at around £43m. That’s considerably below Diaz’s £67m release clause.

But, as we discussed here, that lower price may only be for a summer transfer. Record claim Porto would want the full release clause in January. Liverpool’s big question, then, is whether having cover over AFCON is worth £24m.

Honestly, it probably isn’t. Not unless Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are gone for far longer than we imagine.

We won’t hold our breath on this one, then. It sounds as though Diaz could be a summer target but January may not suit all parties.
