Manchester United are close to appointing Ralph Rangnick as interim manager, according to reports. It sets up an exciting match against Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
The BBC, among many others, believe Manchester United will appoint Ralph Rangnick as their new manager. It’ll be on an interim basis, to start – but we know how that can go.
It’s an interesting appointment for a whole host of reasons. One of those, though, undoubtedly involves Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp and Rangnick go back a long way, with the two of them leading German coaching in the 21st century. Rangnick helped introduce a hard counter-press into the country’s football, with Klopp later taking those methods and taking them up a level.
It’s a huge part of why Klopp believes Rangnick is ‘the best German coach’. His ideas, after all, helped set the base for what the now-Liverpool boss has done.
Not that Rangnick is alone in setting that base – Klopp’s time as a player under Wolfgang Frank at Mainz played an even bigger role. But it’s undeniable that Rangnick’s fingerprints are all over his compatriot’s playing style.
And that sets up a very interesting match in 2022.
Ralph Rangnick to be new Manchester United manager
We haven’t seen a proper United v Liverpool game in some time. By which we mean two top sides really pushing for the win.
The last few years have seen a host of United bosses who weren’t particularly interested in going all-out. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all made for fairly dull opponents in their own ways.
Except for the most recent game, of course. That simply saw United embarrass themselves – it was a great game for Liverpool fans but a joke as a contest.
In Rangnick, though, United will have a boss who not only wants to attack but in the same all-action style as Klopp. It should be an intense game, with counter-pressing and more energy than anyone can take.
Honestly, we can’t wait. March 19th is the date, Anfield is the place, for what should be the best fixture between the two in years.
