Here’s the confirmed Liverpool lineup vs Porto in the UEFA Champions League this evening. The Reds have nothing to play for in their group.
Liverpool have been brilliant in their Champions League group this season, winning all four games so far. That means they’re not only through already but they’ve topped the group.
Thus the game against Porto tonight doesn’t actually have anything riding on it. There’s money for winning, of course, but the Reds won’t affect their standing no matter the result.
That will naturally impact Jurgen Klopp’s thinking with his team selection. He won’t take any needless risks, even if a few stars may make the XI.
There are injuries to contend with, too. Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are all out. James Milner and Divock Origi both returned to training this week, though, but haven’t had much time to regain fitness.
Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson both had knocks in the international break – does it make sense to risk them here?
Let’s have a look at what Klopp has gone for, then.
Confirmed Liverpool lineup vs Porto
Williams – Konate – Matip – Tsimikas
Oxlade-Chamberlain – Thiago
Salah – Mane – Minamino
Well, we didn’t expect to see Alisson or Thiago here. The latter, in particular, feels like a massive risk given his injury record in recent times.
But we’ll trust Liverpool, of course. If they believe Thiago is ready to go, he must be ready to go – and the extra game could help build further momentum for the Spaniard.
We can only imagine Origi isn’t 100%, too, as he’s on the bench. Minamino gets a rare start instead after his goal at the weekend.
Overall, a strong team – arguably needlessly so – and an interesting one.

why are Mane and Salah starting 😭😭— .Luca. (@LuccaLfc) November 24, 2021
Reaction is really split for this one. Most are simply angry that Salah & Mane start a game in which they really don’t need to. We saw Diogo Jota pick up a bad injury in similar fashion last year.
But many are happy for Morton, who has grown his reputation a lot over the last few months. That’s certainly a positive in amongst the fears here.
