Tyler Morton could be in line for a Premier League debut v Arsenal later today. The Liverpool youngster is in first-team training.
Tyler Morton trained with Liverpool’s first team this week, per the Liverpool Echo. It sets up talk that he could be involved against Arsenal on Saturday.
Which would be a shock, of course. Morton has never played in the Premier League and didn’t seem particularly close to senior football at the start of the season.
That did change against Norwich City, however. Morton came on at half-time in the EFL Cup game at Carrow Road to play exceptionally well.
So well, in fact, that he’s likely a serious contender to face Arsenal today.
Could Tyler Morton debut in Liverpool v Arsenal?
As things stand, Liverpool only have two fit midfielders for this one. Thiago and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are ready to play, with everyone else either ruled out or a serious doubt.
Now, we don’t think Morton would actually start against Arsenal. More likely is that Jurgen Klopp takes a chance on Jordan Henderson, Fabinho or Naby Keita but doesn’t give them the full 90 minutes.
In fact, given Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago’s injury records, Liverpool will likely be reluctant to have anyone play their entire game. Though, obviously, they’ll have to risk someone.

But as a substitute, Morton could be a great option. He’s a possession player, capable of keeping the ball and recycling it at the base of midfield.
It’s a role Liverpool will almost certainly want to use against Arsenal. The Gunners are rarely the better team when they come second in possession. Morton, then, should fit the Reds’ gameplan nicely.
And if the likes of Henderson, Fabinho, Keita or James Milner aren’t available, we’d expect to see Morton come off the bench. It would be his Premier League debut, of course, but circumstances might make it the right time.
