Aston Villa have announced that Steven Gerrard has joined the club as Dean Smith’s managerial replacement and it is exciting for Liverpool supporters.
There seems to be an inevitability that Gerrard will one day manage his boyhood club, and returning to the Premier League as head coach of the Midlands side is the ideal next step.
The Scouser can hardly expect to walk into Anfield as the Reds’ next coach, after the incredible work Jurgen Klopp has done, without proving himself in England as a coach first.
He has done a wonderful job with Rangers and I’m certain it was a difficult decision to make to walk away from the Scottish side mid-season. But this is his best chance of proving to Liverpool that he has what it takes to one day take over from Klopp.
That’s the context. Now, Liverpool fans will surely be desperate to know when he will return to Anfield and it’s a lot sooner than I thought, with Aston Villa set to travel to Merseyside during the festive fixture list.
The Villans will be at Anfield on December 11 and I’m really not ready for Gerrard potentially beating Liverpool on his return to the ground that saw him score so many important goals.
Liverpool will surely be keeping a very close eye on Gerrard. With Aston Villa sitting 16th in the Premier League but blessed with some very talented players, it is going to be fascinating to watch them for the rest of the season.
Gary McAllister will also head to Villa with Gerrard, with both former Reds set for Premier League returns after the international break.
